Cota CocaYou are now here: The Sacred Valley / Cota Coca
A new lost city!
Hidden in a valley, 50 km northwest of Machu Picchu, Cota Coca was discovered by the Ziegler-Thomson expedition. Archaeologists and explorers, Gary Ziegler and Hugh Thomson have uncovered ancient Inca dwellings that lay hidden under the carpet of the jungle for over 500 years. Cota Coca is located at the meeting place of the Yanama and Blanco rivers. The city is 1.850 m above sea level. The old city was very well preserved, about 30 typical Inca stone buildings were uncovered from the vegetation and the ground. One of these buildings is significantly larger than the others, measuring over 20 m in length. If you're willing to visit Cota Coca, you'd better give the idea up! It's very remote, can only be accessed after walking in deep jungle, through a hardly accessible river canyon. Of course, the place is home to poisonous snakes, dangerous insects. Cota Coca is not for tourists. Not yet, at least.
