The Red Fort
Puca Pucara means "Red Fortress" or "Red Fort" and it is an Inca ruin near the road that leads from Cuzco to Antisuyo. Puca Pucara is quite close to Tambomachay, another ruin in the area.
Puca Pucara was a military checkpoint - the complex includes warehouses, homes, springs, aqueducts
It was called "Red Fort" due to its reddish walls.
The ruins have remains of what seemed to have been watchtowers. It also has high walls. These characteristics underline the fact that it could have been a military site.
Puca Pucara also has internal squares, staircases and aqueducts.
The closeness of Tambomachay is also important. The Inca ruler used to visit the Tambomachay baths periodically and then, his army and servants were left at Puca Pucara.
Getting There
Only 9 km (5.6 mi) from the city of Cuzco, it can be best reached by car. The ride takes 15 - 20 minutes on average. You could also walk there on foot. Then, it will take about 2 hours.
You won't find many maps about Puca Pucara and on many regional maps it isn't even shown. It's overall not a highly important site. Overall, Puca Pucara is not a main travel attraction in the area. Reason why very few people come to visit it. |
