UrubambaYou are now here: The Sacred Valley / Urubamba
The town of Urubamba
Urubamba is one of the most visited towns in the "Valle Sagrado". In this town is "perturbated" by mass tourism. There are less souvenir sellers like in Ollantaytambo or Písac, so the traditional life is quite well preserved. Architecturally the town of Chinchero (or Chincheros) is much more impressive with a large archaeological site at its edge. Even so, Urubamba is "in the way" of tourists, because it is on the way to the ruins of Machu Picchu, so curiosity attracts foreigners there. The town may lack major Inca attractions, but it's still beautiful. It's easy to reach because the roads are good, but it's faster by train. The train station is just near the Hotel Libertador. Urubamba can be a starting point for those wanting to head for the Moray terraces or the Salinas. A road vehicle is necessary though, the walk would be very long and exhausting. The small village of Yucay is quite close, about 4 km away.
In Urubamba you
can take the time to capture the sight with your camera. You can also buy
local pottery. A renowned local pottery maker is Pablo Seminario. The
workshop of the master is located on the corner of Zavala and Mariscal
Castilla. He's famed and many people buy exclusively the art pieces made
by him. If you are looking for pottery that differs from what you
can find elsewhere, then check out the work of Pablo Seminario |
