Maras

You are now here: The Sacred Valley / Maras

Maras, a small, rarely visited village in the Sacred Valley

This little village is rarely on the list of tourists who are visiting this part of Peru. Other towns like Chinchero, CalcaPísac, Urubamba and Yucay attract much more, having more attractions and therefore a more significant potential in tourism.

Maras is best known for its Salinas salt mine, located in the proximity.

Maras is 3.028 m from sea level, 12 km from the town of Urubamba.

While in Maras, you can visit the adobe church and the Salinas, the scenery is beautiful, high mountains are nearby.

So, Maras itself is not a very important destinations, you won't see many interesting things there, but from this village you can reach the Moray terraces (about 8 km to the west) and the Salinas (about 8 km north, closer to the River Vilcanota). Dirt roads connect Maras to both sites.
